What is it?
Kinetic Energy is, of course, a form of energy. It is energy of motion. That means that when an object is moving, it has kinetic energy. An example of kinetic energy could be a yo yo after it is released. When it is falling down, it is kinetic energy.
Potential Energy:
What is it?
Potential Energy is also a form of energy. It is stored energy. That means that when an object is not moving, yet about to move, it has potential energy. An example of potential energy could be a yo yo. When it has reached its maximum height after it is dropped and comes back up, it is not moving. It doesn't move for a tiny bit, but that little part is still potential energy.
Using the words in a sentence:
Kinetic energy is energy in motion, and the opposite, potential energy, is energy that is stored.
Images:
How to teach it:
You should teach kinetic and potential energy by first explaining what energy is in general, then explaining what kinetic and potential energy is. Then you should explain about the yo yo example. Then, you should do an actual example in front of the class. After you do that, you should give each kid a yo yo and have them discover when the yo yo has kinetic and potential energy by themselves. After they figure that out, you should once again reinforce it, but this time, you should use the picture of the man with the ball (above the one with the yo yo).
Other types of energy:
Acoustic, thermal, mechanical, chemical, nuclear, electromagnetic, electric.
Acoustic Energy-
Definition: Acoustic energy is a type of sound made by vibrations. When a object is in motion or vibrates, it causes movement in air particles.
Sentence: You can buy acoustic guitars in many music stores.
Suggestion: Never make the acoustic sound to loud, it can damage you ears.
Teaching: You could teach acoustic energy in class by playing a guitar or listening to music out of speakers. Explain and relate how playing music relates to acoustic energy.
"" ""
Thermal Energy-
Definition: Thermal energy is that caused by heat in some form. An electric heater generates thermal energy that can be used to warm a cold room in the winter.
Sentence: A oven is can cause heat and is a part of energy.
Suggestion: Thermal energy can be hot so be aware when around it.
Teaching: You could teach about thermal energy by creating a fire or some sort of heat. Explain and relate how creating heat relates to thermal energy.
"" ""
Mechanical Energy-
Definition: Using force to accomplish something. Swinging and using a sling shot are forms of mechanical energy.
Sentence: Mechanical energy is used in so many things in so many different ways.
Suggestion: Be careful with what you choose to use your force for.
Teaching: You could teach it by doing simple, everyday things that would use your force, and in doing so, use mechanical energy. Explain what you are doing and how it relates to mechanical energy.
"" ""
Chemical Energy-
Definition: Power created by the reaction between two or more substances
Sentence: A lighted match is an example of chemical energy.
Suggestion: Be careful when lighting a match.
Teaching: You could teach it by showing them a match, and by explaining that when you strike the match and it starts to blaze, that that is chemical energy. You should also explain the definition of chemical energy.
Nuclear Energy-
Definition: Energy released during a nuclear reaction.
Sentence: I went on a field trip to see a nuclear power plant.
Suggestion: Do not get into any bad incidents with nuclear energy. It will win.
Teaching: You should teach it by explaining how dangerous is it and what stuff is made with it. You should explain the definition too.
Electromagnetic Energy-
Definition: Energy that is released in the form of electrical waves.
Sentence: A form of electromagnetic energy is a microwave.
Suggestion: Do not put anything into a microwave other than what you're allowed to.
Teaching: You should teach it by showing a picture of a microwave and explaining how electromagnetic energy relates to the microwave. You should also explain the definition.
Electric Energy-
Definition: Energy through the flow of electric charge.
Sentence: Electric energy can flow through an outlet.
Suggestion: Do not put keys in an outlet.
Teaching: You should show an outlet, and explain the meaning of electric energy. You should talk about how electric energy is becoming more common since more things are running on electricity.
